Sun, Sand, and Stories — Our Favourite Summer Reads

Image
There’s something magical about the way a good book pairs with long summer days. Whether you're stretched out on a beach towel, curled up in a shady hammock, or hiding from a heatwave with a cold drink in hand, the right story can turn a lazy afternoon into a miniature adventure. This summer, we’re diving into books that are sun-soaked, escapist, and just the right amount of addictive — the kind that make you lose track of time (and maybe even your sunscreen). The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley https://uk.bookshop.org/a/10722/9781399726344 A civil servant is offered a lucrative job in a mysterious new government ministry gathering 'expats' from across history to test whether time-travel is feasible.  Springtime is almost upon us and we thought what better than a list of uplifting reads to get you all in the mood for warmer weather, fresh flowers and new beginnings! The Secret Garden  by Frances Hodgson Burnett https://uk.bookshop.org/a/10722/9780141385501 'I've stolen a garden,' she said very fast. 'It isn't mine. It isn't anybody's. Nobody wants it, nobody cares for it, nobody ever goes into it. Perhaps everything is dead in it already; I don't know.' After losing her parents, young Mary Lennox is sent from India to live in her uncle's gloomy mansion on the wild English moors. She is lonely and has no one to play with, but one day she learns of a secret garden somewhere in the grounds that no one is allowed to enter. Then Mary uncovers an old key in a flowerbed - and a gust of magic leads her to the hidden door. Slowly she turns the key and enters a world she could never have imagined. Welcome to the Bookshop Blog!

I am the bookshop owl. You might have seen me ruffling my feathers on the walls of my home - The Bookshop by the Sea. There used to be a picture of me on the sign on the high street. I’m pretty famous really.  I have been hooting a lot about books recently and how much I love them. That’s why I’ve come home to roost in a bookshop. I flew in one day in May when the weather was a little chilly and stayed, mostly because it’s so cosy. I don’t think owls should have to go outside once we have found our reading nooks.  I’ve made lots of friends and characters on the bookshop shelves including the book fairy, the bookworm, and the book princess. They whisper all the things they love about books and reading, writing, art and poetry. ~So snuggle into your feathers and we’ll share some words with you~
